If you have a lot of propane tanks sitting around the house, it's important to maintain them properly. Otherwise, they may not work correctly and could even cause significant injuries. Propane tank maintenance should involve these steps.
1. Clean Regularly
Since propane tanks are often left outside for extended periods of time, dirt and debris can build up that then make the nozzle at the top difficult to turn. You can prevent this from happening with some regularly cleaning. Instead of using just your hands, though, consider investing in a pressure washer.
This machine is extremely powerful when administering water -- helping you remove dirt and other residues that have built up over time. Mix in some detergent if some of the residues are still not coming off so easily. A couple of sprays once or twice a month will keep your propane tanks clean and working at an optimal rate.
2. Store Tanks Appropriately
Although propane tanks are made out of durable materials, they are not indestructible. To ensure they don't experience severe damage, they need to be properly stored. Ideally, you should place these tanks in a storage shed away from your property. So, if something happens that causes these tanks to ignite, you can protect yourself from explosions.
If you don't have a storage shed, consider setting these tanks on a racking system outside. Your tanks will thus have added stability and not be as prone to tipping over. For further protection, place a weatherproof tarp over these outside tanks. When they're properly sealed in these tarps, you can prevent rust from developing.
3. Inspect the Connections
For your propane tanks to work correctly over the years, their connections need to be in good condition. You should get in the habit of checking these connections on a monthly basis to ensure complications don't arise when these propane tanks are in use.
Pay particular attention to rust buildup. If rust has developed on your connections, you'll need to remove it promptly. Baking soda is a great home solution that you can pour on rust -- which will break it up and make it much easier to remove using a wired brush.
